Thursday Night Swing is excited to be offering weekly classes for a wide range of swing dancing levels.  Wether you are just starting out on your dance education or have been dancing for years, we have classes going that will challenge and inspire you to grow. Simply scroll down to view what classes are currently being taught this month and to see what is coming up in the future.

Please note that all classes are created as a progressive month long series, building in difficulty from one week to the next and therefore regular weekly attendance is highly suggested.

All month long series will begin the first Thursday of every month.

DECEMBER 2018

*NOTE: TNS will only be meeting the first three Thursdays in December (December 6th, 13th & 20th) and will be closed on December 27th for the Christmas holiday.

The Dean & Jewel Lindy Hop: PART THREE

Dean Collins and Jewel McGowan were two of the greatest lindy hoppers who ever lived. Their dance skills honed an aesthetic so unique, that it became known as “Dean and Jewel” style and was featured in many of Hollywood’s movies in the 1940’s. Over the last several years, David has worked tirelessly to break down and master their unique style and during this month long series he’ll introduce you to some of their most iconic stylings and teach you the unique partnering mechanics they utilize!  Learn more about Dean and Jewel and watch videos of their iconic dancing by CLICKING HERE!

*NOTE: This a MASTERING level class and will be building on our Dean & Jewel PART ONE & TWO series from July and August, in order to be eligible to participate in PART THREE of this series, students must be proficient in Dean & Jewel’s unique swivel technique and mechanics, their 6-count passes, their unique 8-count swing outs, their sugar pushes that were taught in the first two parts of the series (knowledge of their outside turns will also be helpful but not required).   Any student showing an insufficient understanding of these base Dean & Jewel mechanics from the first two parts of the series may be asked to leave class.

The Tranky Doo Routine

This class is centered around learning the Tranky Doo, a vintage jazz routine popular in the 1940’s.  We will also talk about styling variations and how to incorporate these dance moves into your own improvisational dance.  Whether you’re new to vintage jazz dance or have some experience with it, this series will build your repertoire of flashy solo moves and will give you a foundation in one of the iconic routines of the swing era!

This is a continuing level Solo Jazz class, dancers will need to be fluent in all the Solo Jazz basics taught in our Core Solo Jazz class in order to participate in this progressive series.

Core Solo Jazz

Solo Jazz is a dance done individually instead of with a partner and encompasses a collection of 20s & 40’s Charleston movements as well as a wide variety of vernacular jazz movements adopted from tap dancing.  This class will focus on introducing students to a collection of classic jazz steps and stylings that they can utilize on their own, or within their partnered dancing, in addition to teaching them Frankie Manning’s iconic Shim Sham routine.

Beginner Foundations Class

If you’ve never danced before, or you are just new to swing dancing, this is the class for you! This class is set up to introduce you to the fundamentals of swing dancing and runs continuously every month.  Each week in this introductory class we’ll show you the basic 6-count Lindy footwork, how to partner with a lead/follow, how to move around on the floor with your partner and 1-2 foundational moves (these rotate from week to week)


NOVEMBER 2018

Continuing Lindy: Let’s Get The Conversation Started

Have you heard people say Lindy Hop is supposed to be a conversation, but you don’t know what that means? Our series is going to focus on lead follow connection and how each role can affect the partnership. Follows will learn how to influence more changes, and leads will learn how to respond and build from their follows!

This is a continuing level Lindy class, dancers will need to be fluent in all the Lindy Hop basics taught in our Core 6-Count and Core 8-Count classes in order to participate in this progressive series.

Continuing Blues: Blues Dancing in Context

We’ve been learning about dancing to Jazz Blues for several months at TNS now, but what do we know about the music we’re dancing to and how it relates to Swing? Each Thursday in this class, we’ll explore a new Jazz Blues artist, and dive into their catalog of music, brining the context of their lives and home regions to the forefront. But never fear! This will DEFINITELY be a dance class first. We’ll talk about the musical choices we make given some context, and we’ll learn plenty of new vocabulary to add to your Savoy Walk and Stride skills, and even introduce the New Orleans Strut to your repertoire!

This is a continuing level class, We ask that you know the basics of Savoy Walk and/or Stride. We’ll give a quick primer on each before diving in, but if you’ve taken a month-long blues lesson at TNS this year, you should be good to go! 8-Count Lindy Hop

This class will teach the fundamental 8-count patterns of Lindy Hop, such as the swing-out and circle. It will also focus on how to combine 8-count moves with the 6-count moves learned in the fundamental classes!

OCTOBER 2018

All Together Now!

In this month long series we’ll be doing a deep dive on your Lindy Hop partner connection!  We’ll explore the nitty gritty of how to create dynamic stretches in your partnership, show you how harness the power of the momentum you build up together, and play with how leads and follows can share the range of movement throughout a dance!

This is a continuing level class, dancers will need to be fluent in all the Lindy Hop basics taught in our Core 6-Count and Core 8-Count classes in order to participate in this progressive series.

Continuing Balboa

Pumpkin Spice Your Bal! Fall is here and that means we’re going to let loose and have just have some fun this month spicing up your Balboa!  For the first half of the month we’ll be focusing on spicing up your PURE BALBOA! That means new rhythms, that means stylings, things are gonna get a little crazy people, and that’s the way we like it!  Then during the second half of the month we’ll move onto some ways you can spice up a few of your good old classic bal-swing moves, and then also play around with some fun new moves as well!

This is a continuing level class, dancers will need to be fluent in all the Balboa basics taught in our Core Balboa Series, in order to participate in this progressive series.

6-Count Lindy Hop

This ain’t your mama’s six count swing class!  This class will focus on teaching students the in depth technique and partnership connection skills that define Lindy Hop.  On top of that, students will learn a wide variety of 6-count Lindy Hop movements to play with on the dance floor.

If you’ve never danced before, or you are just new to swing dancing, this is the class for you! SEPTEMBER 2018

Tandem Charleston

In this month long series we’ll spice up your Lindy language with some fun, fast-paced Tandem Charleston! This unique style of Charleston places both dancers in line facing the same direction, and then let’s loose with all the fun kicking movements that you’ve come to expect and love in Charleston dancing! In this series we’ll not only show you how to integrate this unique position into your dancing, we’ll also show you a variety of fun moves, variations, entrances and exits!

This is a continuing level class, dancers will need to be fluent in all the Lindy & Charleston basics taught in our Core 6-Count, Core 8-Count and Core Charleston classes in order to participate in this progressive series.

Continuing Blues

Stride! This month, Adam & Krystal are going to take you beyond Savoy Walk down the Mississippi to a southern blues dance called Stride! We’ll be building on the foundations you learned in August, including partnering, turn dynamics, and traveling, and we’ll really STRETCH them across the floor in this mobile dance. We’ll talk about dancing to blues music that’s more southern-derived, so if you love Louis Armstrong and Kid Ory, or you just had a GREAT time in August with Dom and Bethany, come on out!

This is a continuing level class, dancers will need to be fluent in all the Blues basics taught in our Core Blues Series, be comfortable dancing in close embrace, and LOVE JAZZ, in order to participate in this progressive series.

Core Charleston

This class will focus on teaching the basic footwork of 40s Charleston, both as a solo dancer and as a partnership.  During the course of this class will be students will learn a wider vocabulary of solo movements to increase their own body awareness as a dancer in addition to a variety of partner movements they can have fun with on the social floor.

Beginner Blues

Blues dancing is a style of partner dancing that originally began in black communities during the early 1900s. Its a street dance often associated with swing dancing, but typically danced at much slower tempos to music from the likes of Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald & Muddy Waters. It is characterized by it’s slow controlled body movements and rich partnership connection. This class will focus on teaching you the fundamental patterns and movements of Blues!

JUNE 2018

6:30PM – 7:30PM Classes

The Dean Collins Shim Sham Routine

You learned Frankie Manning’s Shim Sham in your Core Solo Jazz class, now it’s time to bump of the difficulty level and show you the Dean Collins version! A routine that originated from tap dancing and was adopted by swing dancers, the Shim Sham is a line dance that is done around the world, with each dancer bringing their own unique styling to it. The Dean Collins version of the Shim Sham takes it’s name from Dean Collins, a famous Lindy Hopper who helped start the Lindy revolution in Southern California in the last 1930s. It is known for it’s sophisticated syncopations, elegant rhythms and smooth footwork!

IMPORTANT SCHEDULE NOTE: Due to a scheduling conflict, this will only be a 3 WEEK COURSE with no official class on June 14th.  Instead of having class that evening we will be leading a FREE practice session where you can work on and refine the content taught in the previous weeks class!

Exploring Blues: Savoy Walk from the Beginning… and Beyond!

Come learn the partnered dance of slow jazz and jazz blues danced at the world famous Savoy Ballroom! The Savoy was a ballroom in New York where much of our current history of Lindy Hop originated. But not all the music there was upbeat and swung! Come learn this Blues Idiom, danced by those same folks who pioneered Lindy, and get your slow dance groove on. This class is targeted at the intermediate level, but it will be progressive week-to-week, starting with the basic step and moving into cool figures and partner dynamics we’re sure will challenge you, whatever your level!

Moves Every Lindy Hopper Should Know

There some moves that just need to be in every Lindy Hoppers bag of tricks. Moves that are so iconic, so well known, that it would be criminal for us to not teach them to you, moves like Switches, Texas Tommies, Jig Walks & More! That’s why each week of this month long series will be dedicated to teaching you one of these iconic movements, breaking down the technique behind them and showing you a wide range of styling options and variations!

Exploring Balboa: Turns & Spins

We’ll be focusing on turns and spins for your balboa all month long during this continuing level class!  From refining basic turn technique for leads and follows, to exploring the world of inside turns, outside turns, pop-turns, free spins, multiple turns and texas tommies, we’ll be going over all the subtle technique you’ll need to lead and follow each of them with confidence!

This is a continuing level class, dancers will need to be fluent in all their balboa basics including toss-outs, lollies, and out and ins.
